Chadwick, but really just T’Challa

I write this with a heavy heart.

I had another devotional written and scheduled to go out but then I got the news.

Chadwick Boseman, the movie star who had seemingly played every great black historical figure, (Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall), other than MLK passed away on August 28th, 2020.

Perhaps no on screen role was greater than when he portrayed T’Challa son T’Chaka in the movie Black Panther which hit theaters in February of 2018.

I still remember the feeling of pride my wife and I had wearing our Black Panther T-Shirts and watching the movie together.

‘Wakanda Forever’ we said gleefully as we exited the theater.

What is interesting is that in the aftermath of his death it would appear the most important roles that Chadwick Boseman played weren’t on a movie screen but on the stage of life.

Family, friends, and co-workers have all shared stories about Boseman’s kindness and his tireless efforts to uplift others all while, unbeknownst to many, battling stage 4 colon cancer!

In the midst of losing a true hero it can be hard to find a silver lining, but as I look at Psalm 34:18-22 I see the promise of God at work:

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

God restores broken hearts and spirits with the peace and joy that only He can provide.

Prayer: Lord we pray for peace for the Boseman family for their recent loss. We also lift up all of our friends and family who have experienced loss this year. Restore our broken hearts Lord, we cry out to You!

Action: This week don’t take the opportunity for granted to spend time with those you love most. Watch a few movies starring Chadwick Boseman and appreciate his on screen brilliance.
