Gardening 101
Earlier this year we received a great blessing when we were able to purchase a new home.
One of the many benefits of our new home were two raised garden beds left by the previous owners.
Being new to gardening I figured I would try to plant a few things and see what would grow.
I was blessed to be able to grow cucumbers, carrots, radishes, and lettuce successfully.
One of the things anyone with a garden will tell you is that you’ve got to keep it watered and free of weeds.
The watering part is easy enough, but when the seeds first start to sprout it can be confusing as to what is a weed versus the actual plant or vegetable that is supposed to be growing.
In Matthew 13:24-30, Jesus provides some real life advice for identifying what needs to be weeded out:
Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.
But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
“The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’
“‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.
“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
“‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’
It’s time to pull up the weeds that you have allowed the enemy to plant in your life.
Prayer: Lord help me to identify the things in my life that need to be removed or weeded out. Take away the things that are preventing me from growing in You as I should.
Actions: Are there certain things in your life that you have let grow that should have been uprooted a long time ago? First, ask God to help you identify those areas. Then ask Him to put people around you in fellowship that will hold you accountable and help you to remove those strongholds.
