In the movie Captain America: Civil War, The Avengers face a crossroads after their recent actions have resulted in civilian loss of life and massive property damage across the world.
Tony Stark agrees with the government’s assessment that the Avengers need to cede their power to a governing body to direct their operations.
Steve Rogers vehemently opposes being under government control as his previous experiences have led him to distrust government institutions.
The resulting rift between Tony and Steve cause the Avengers to divide and align themselves with either Tony or Steve, respectively.
In Matthew 12:22-26 Jesus illustrates the instability of a divided kingdom:
Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and unable to speak was brought to Him. He healed him, so that the man could both speak and see. And all the crowds were astounded and said, “Perhaps this is the Son of David!” When the Pharisees heard this, they said, “The man drives out demons only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” Knowing their thoughts, He told them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is headed for destruction, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?
Divided kingdoms are destined to fall, but The Kingdom of God stands eternally united.
Prayer: Lord there is much division that has been sown in the body of Christ recently. Let us unite in the truth that You are God and love us unconditionally. Give us Your Spirit of discernment to see clearly in all matters of this world.
Action: Don’t sow seeds of division. If you must temporarily take a step back from platforms or relationships that aren’t edifying your witness and relationship with God.
