Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most popular video game characters in history.

Game sales featuring Sonic have topped six billion dollars according to estimates taken at the end of 2020.

After Tom Kalinske was hired as CEO of Sega of America in 1990, he held a company wide contest to create a lead mascot character that could compete against Nintendo’s Mario.

When the winning submission was a blue hedgehog with red shoes named Sonic, many of Sega’s marketing experts disagreed with the selection thinking it would not appeal to children.

Undeterred by criticism, Kalinske made the decision to include Sonic the Hedgehog as the pack-in game for the Sega Genesis in 1991.

In 1 Samuel 6:13 we learn the importance of looking beyond outward appearances:

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Certainly the Lord’s anointed one is here before Him.”

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature, because I have rejected him. Man does not see what the Lord sees, for man sees what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.”

Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either,” Samuel said. Then Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either.” After Jesse presented seven of his sons to him, Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord hasn’t chosen any of these.” Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.” So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy, handsome appearance.

Then the Lord said, “Anoint him, for he is the one.” So Samuel took the horn of oil, anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord took control of David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.

Without the Spirit of God it is impossible to see things as they truly are.

Prayer: Lord please forgive me for looking at things with the wrong perspective. Lord let me see things as you see them. Not through a lens of comparison, but as You’ve intended them to be in their true form.

Action: Is there a relationship or situation that you’ve been struggling with recently? Ask God to change your perspective and allow you to see it through His eyes.
