This year, before my daughter and I planted seeds in our garden we had to get the soil ready. As we tilled the ground to remove weeds and other unwanted debris, my daughter noticed many worms crawling underneath. At first she was alarmed, but I assured her this was a good thing. The presence of the worms signified that there was life in the soil. In Genesis 2:4-7 we witness the creation of mankind as God breathes life into the soil: This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Your soul now inhabits the very soil you were created from. |
Prayer |
Lord, thank You! Our living bodies are evidence that there is life in the soil! When it is time for our bodies to return to the soil, we rest in the hope that our eternal souls will be returned to You. There we will worship and glorify You for all of eternity! |
Action |
Find a way to appreciate and observe the environment. While often politicized, taking care of God’s earth is our responsibility. Whether you’re picking up trash, using more energy efficient appliances, or planting flowers, take the time to cultivate and care for the ‘soil’ from whence we came. |
DID YOU KNOW? – BREAK BREAD TRIVIA |
Nearly everything humans eat can be traced back to soil, and that’s true for other animals as well. Wild plants need healthy soil to thrive, so other species can eat the leaves and seeds and fruit and predators can eat the plant eaters. |
