I really don’t know how to sit down.
My wife lovingly calls me a busy body, at least I think it’s lovingly, and tells me I don’t know how to relax.
In my mind there’s always something else that needs to be done and I am laser focused on accomplishing these things.
My self created, amorphous to-do lists have often robbed me of my peace and ability to see what’s most important in life.
In Luke 10:38-42 Jesus explains the important difference between doing many things and doing what’s most important:
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Any accomplishment that is worthwhile is a result from spending time with God.
Prayer: Lord help me to stop what I’m doing and just spend time with You. No to-do lists, no five year plans, no agenda. Let me sit at Your feet and listen quietly as You speak. Mold me and train me to value my time with You above all else.
Action: Tear up your to-do list for a day. Ok, drop everything for at least an hour. Then spend time with an uncluttered mind listening for God’s voice.
