The United States is a country that is steeped in excess.
Pithy sayings like ‘bigger is better’ or ‘you can never be too thin or too rich’ underscore the heart of our nation’s culture.
In some cases the gospel message has been co-opted to promote financial gain in exchange for following Jesus.
In Psalms 1:1-3 we see the illustration of how the Lord provides for those who remain in Him:
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither, whatever they do prospers.
There is no gain higher than following Jesus.
Prayer: Lord please forgive me. I have wanted the things You have provided more than I longed to be in Your presence. Renew in my spirit my desire to seek You in earnest daily.
Action: What have you longed for more of recently? Was it Jesus? Do a heart check this week and take note of your greatest desires.
