Recently my daughter had the option of having chocolate ice cream for dessert or having a chocolate cupcake.
The catch was the ice cream was available immediately, but the cupcake was only available after we got home.
My daughter chose the ice cream and appeared to thoroughly enjoy it.
However, when she got home she was upset that she could not have the cupcake.
It seemed that even though she enjoyed the ice cream she regretted her decision not to wait for the cupcake.
In Genesis 25:29-34, a tired and famished Esau makes a regrettable decision to sell his birthright for a bowl of stew:
Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom. Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Hasty decisions often lead to regret, but the Holy Spirit provides discernment for all matters.
Prayer: Lord, I am sorry that I chose what I thought was best without consulting You in prayer. Please allow me to filter all of my future decisions through Your Spirit.
Action: Too often we make snap decisions without considering the future consequences of our actions. This week self reflect, think and consider some decisions you made that could have turned out better if you had first consulted the Holy Spirit.
