Originally conceived as the tag line ‘Don’t leave home without them’ which referred to the company’s travelers cheques, the repurposed slogan ‘Don’t leave home without it’ became synonymous with American Express credit cards.

This iconic phrase was so impactful on American Express marketing that it wasn’t modified until 2018, marking an almost 4 decade long run for the slogan.

The newest catch phrase didn’t stray too far from what proved to be so fruitful: ‘Don’t live life without it’ has a distinct similarity to its predecessor.

While an American Express card offers many benefits, in John 16:13 and Acts 1:4-5,8 Jesus tells the disciples about something that is coming that they can’t afford to live life without:

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

[You] will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Don’t live life without the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the Holy Spirit. Without it my life would be aimless with my purpose always out of reach. Holy Spirit please guide me in the way of truth for my life. Let me filter all of my decisions through Your ever present truth.

Action: If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior then the Holy Spirit lives in you. Are you filtering your decisions and choices through the truth of the Holy Spirit? If not, you may be missing out on God’s purpose for your life.
