The song, My Mind’s Playing Tricks on Me by the Geto Boys, tells a story of people who have lost the ability to see reality as it truly is. In particular, the last verse portrays a man fighting against a force which he perceives as being real, even though it is not. This year Halloween fell on a weekend Me and Geto Boys are trick-or-treatin’ Robbing little kids for bags Till a law man got behind our rags So we speeded up the pace Took a look back and he was right before our face He’d be in for a squabble, no doubt So I swung and tried to take him out He was going down, we planned But this wasn’t no ordinary man He stood about six or seven feet Now that’s a creep I’d be seeing in my sleep So we triple-teamed on him Dropping them 5th Ward B’s on him The more I swung, the more blood flew Then he disappeared and my boys disappeared too Then I felt just like a fiend It wasn’t even close to Halloween It was dark as death on the streets My hands were all bloody, from punching on the concrete Aw man, homie My mind is playing tricks on me In Mark 4:2-12, Jesus shares a story that not all who hear will have the ability to understand: And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, so that “‘they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.’ Without the Holy Spirit you will never perceive the spiritual reality provided by Jesus. Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that You have opened my mind to the reality of Your Kingdom. I no longer have to walk in doubt about the promises of an eternity with You. Action: Has your mind been telling you things about your reality that aren’t line with the promises of God? This week spend some time with God and ask Him to show you the reality of your situation. |
