In June of 2015, Arthur Booth was not expecting to find solace while awaiting sentencing for a burglary charge. But during his bond hearing the judge, Mindy Glazer, stopped the court proceedings to ask Arthur a question. Mindy wanted to know if Arthur had attended Nautilus Middle School. Surprised, he looked up and was overcome with emotion as he recognized an old friend, not a judge. In John 15:10-15 Jesus shares the parameters that define His friendship with His disciples: If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. Jesus is a friend to all those who follow His commands. Prayer: Lord, I thank You that in this new year, I still have an everlasting hope in Your love and mercy. I am honored to be called Your friend. Action: Share a kind word of encouragement with someone this week. It may be someone close to you or someone you meet in passing. |
