The Louisiana Purchase is one of the most important and significant events in United States history. The 15 million dollar deal with France instantly doubled the size of the United States, adding 828,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River. Considered to be a resounding success by almost all historians, initially President Thomas Jefferson received criticism on the grounds that the deal was unconstitutional. However, Secretary of State James Madison was able to persuade lawmakers that the president had full authority to make such a purchase. In 1 Peter 1:18-19 and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 both Peter and Paul share that Christ had the authority to pay the cost to redeem mankind from sin: For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. Through His blood Jesus purchased our freedom from sin. |
